Numerous myths and tales have formed, trying to explain the unique shapes and formations of this place. This is why as early as 1833 and 1852, the area was declared a protected zone to prevent people from removing the saught after sandstone.
Since 1935, the area Bode, north of Thale has been declared a nature reserve and is one of Germany’s oldest.
